CHUCK MITSUI’S ONE KINE DAY WILL BE SCREENED AS THE CLOSING NIGHT FILM AT CHICAGO’S 16th ANNUAL ASIAN AMERICAN SHOWCASE

CBS’ top rate series Hawaii Five-0 is not only attracting viewers with clever plot twists and character development but is piling on notable guest stars pretty much in every episode…Two weeks ago it was Sean Combs aka P Diddy (above), then last week it was pop singer turned actor Rick Springfield and in the episode currently being filmed the bar is raised much higher with acclaimed bad guy James Remar (below) in the episode called Ua Hiki Mai Kapalena Pau…

Remar, who arrived today from Los Angeles, plays businessman Elliot Conner, who owns a company called Fallon Global…Remar gained recognition as a punk who gets chained to a park bench by a woman cop in his second film, The Warriors (1979). That same year he garnered acclaim on Broadway as Richard Gere’s lover in the concentration camp drama Bent. He played gangster Dutch Schultz in Francis Ford Coppola‘s The Cotton Club, one of the Neanderthals in The Clan of the Cave Bear (1986), and an experienced military officer who doubts the power of Shakespeare in Renaissance Man (1994). Remar is still best known for his galvanizing performances as a homicidal maniac escaped from prison in  48 Hrs. and as a no-nonsense cop in Drugstore  Cowboy (1989)…

Meanwhile, Springfield’s character Renny Sinclair, a handsome, artistic and passionate. He is in Hawaii shooting a swimsuit cover alongside his model fiancé Kenza when tragedy strikes …His model fiance is played by real life model Serinda Swan (above at Haleiwa)…This episode is called Ho’ ohuli Na’au

Hawaii Five-0 is also giving local actors a chance to shine…Joji Yoshida (above) appears in the upcoming episode Ma Ke Kahakai in which he has some major screen time with star Alex O’Loughlin and co star Evan Jones…Yoshida plays Jack Leung…In the episode Kono (Grace Park) learns the truth about her cousin Chin Ho’s career ending scandal with the Honolulu Police Department…There is a special cameo by world-renowned Chef Masaharu Morimoto who plays himself. The episode was filmed in Morimoto’s restaurant at The Waikiki Edition…Morimoto will host a private party for the cast of Hawaii Five-0 at the restaurant on April 11, the evening the episode airs…

Certainly good news for Chuck Mitsui’s debut feature One Kine Day production – starring Christa B. Allen, Julia Nickson-Soul and Jolene Blalock – as the closing night film for the 16th annual Chicago showcase…The film is presented by the Gene Siskel Film Center and the Foundation for Asian American Independent Media (FAAIM)…Written and directed by Mitsui, One Kine Day will be screened at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 10 and at 6 p.m. on Monday, April 11 at the Siskel Film Center in the heart of Chicago’s theater district…

Filmed on location in Hawaii and produced by Haolewood Productions, One Kine Day won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the 2010 Hawaii International Film Festival. It takes viewers on a journey to “another” side of Hawaii – the side filmmakers rarely portray on screen…This “modest, involving drama” (Variety) captures a day in the life of slacker-skater Ralsto (newcomer Ryan Greer). In the course of One Kine Day, Ralsto sees his relatively carefree world fade away into a more complicated existence when he learns his 15-year-old girlfriend is pregnant for the second time…The soundtrack includes Jawaiian, Hawaiian, hip-hop, R&B and reggae – reflecting the eclectic and innovative nature of contemporary Hawaiian music today. Featured artists include Fiji, Na Wai, J-Boog, Pati, Kawao, Black Square and more…
