RELATIVITY MEDIA HOSTS STAR-STUDDED MEET & GREET WITH HI FILM REPS & LEGISLATORS

RELATIVITY MEDIA HOSTS STAR-STUDDED MEET & GREET WITH HI FILM REPS & LEGISLATORS

RELATIVITY MEDIA’S CEO RYAN KAVANAUGH PULLS OUT ALL THE STOPS AS HE PUSHES HAWAII TO MORE THAN DOUBLE TAX INCENTIVES

Following hours of testimony on Monday before a Hawaii Senate committee over a proposed bill to increase Hawaii’s tax incentives for film and television productions shooting in Hawaii, Relativity Media’s CEO Ryan Kavanaugh (above) hosted a two hour-plus cocktail party at Mandalay Restaurant in downtown Honolulu where more than 100 state legislators, Maui County officials, including Rod Antone, public information officer for the MAui mayor, and production representatives, including film production executive Chris Lee and Maui location manager Glenn Beadles gathered to meet and discuss the bill….

But it wasn’t all free drinks and Peking Duck. Kavanaugh, known for his business agressive style and charismatic sales pitches, flew in a cadre of stars on his private jet  from Los Angeles to woo the Hawaii contingent. Stars attending included Oscar winners Adrien Brody and Cuba Gooding, TV star Zack Braff, Emmy Award winner Roseanne Barr, and Bradley  Cooper, minus girlfriend Rene Zellweger, and Branscomb Richmond…Kavanaugh roamed the room espousing his passion for making movies and Hawaii. He has a home on Maui…But his primary mission was to tell the gathering that Hawaii could attract 20-30 major film and TV productions a year – including some from his own company – if the state’s tax incentives for productions were increased to as much as 35 percent on Oahu and 40 percent on the Neighbor Islands. He also wants to build a studio on Maui partly with taxpayer funds and create a program to train future crew…

Prior to the cocktail party, Kavanaugh met privately with the Hawaii Film and Entertainment Board that included Georgia Skinner, Hawaii’s Creative Industries Division administrator that includes he state film office, Walea Constantinau, Oahu’s film commissioner, and SAG executive director Brenda ChingChris Lee, who is doing some liasoning for Relativity Media here in Hawaii, said the opportunity “seems amazing” and “deserves at the least a close look” to see if the proposal can work “for Hawaii”…Kavanaugh showed a brief film of various actors he’s worked with either promoting the Senate bill or saying how much they wanted to work again in Hawaii with a few shakas thrown in for familiarity sake…

Actor Branscomb Richmond believes the proposal is “a platinum opportunity” to put Hawaii “in the drivers seat” in the United States to attract productions, especially Maui where he also has a home…”We can’t let this get away from us,” he said…

Speaking of Roseanne Barr, who was dressed in a bright pink pants suit, well she’s back on TV in a new Lifetime docu-series as she sets out to run a macadamia nut farm on the Big Island….The program will follow Barr as she runs a 40-acre nut farm along with her writer-musician boyfriend Johnny Argent and her son, Jake. She “uses a take-no-prisoners approach in shaping a Utopian dream for herself and her loved ones,” says the press release…

“I’m coming back down to earth, and keeping it real,” Barr said in a statement. “They’ve said ‘Roseanne’s nuts’ for years, and now I’m going to make that a reality — I’m all about nuts now, macadamia nuts!”…

Lifetime ordered sixteen half-hour episodes of the as-yet-untitled series which will debuts sometime in 2011…

Meanwhile, back at the Kavanaugh party, shortly after 10 p.m. celebs were driven to Honolulu Airport then whisked back to L.A. on the private jet on which they arrived…

Pixar will release two new short films starring Woody and pals by year’s end. The first short, Toy Story Hawaiian Vacation, will run with Cars 2, which will arrive in theaters on June 24. Pixar unveiled Toy Story Hawaiian Vacation at a gathering of about 300 Disney investors and analysts in Anaheim, Calif., on Thursday. (Barbie and Ken try to stow away with Bonnie for a Hawaii trip but get left home, to their enormous disappointment; Woody, Buzz and the other toys try to console the pair by improvising an island vibe but . . . it doesn’t go well.) The second short — a title was not announced — will run with The Muppets, a Disney feature film set for a Thanksgiving release…
