Universal Pictures mega action film Battleship did two days of shooting more than a mile offshore Barbers Point Thursday and Friday staging battles on a huge production filled and staged barge anchored offshore.







The production’s equipment, crew, and actors, reportedly including Taylor Kitsch, were shuttled to the barge on boats based at the Kalaeloa Deep Draft Harbor’s Pier 1…








Battleship is based on the Hasbro board game. Kitsch plays a naval officer, who with his brother, leads a ship to fight against a superior alien force across the seas, in the skies, and on land. The film is currently set for release on May 25, 2012…

Battleship crew say they are amazed at how “huge” this film is, telling Reel Hawaii that the budget could hit $250-million…None of the film’s primary actors have been fitted for wardrobe…The crew call for tomorrow’s shoot is 4:30 a.m.!…







All six weeks of Oahu filming will be exteriors – four weeks on land, including the USS MIssouri, and one week on water…Tomorrow’s filming will feature men being blown off of a ship, actually a barge docked along Leeward Oahu…No Major stars are expected on set for the first day of filming…



Several crew who worked here on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides say security to get on the Battleship set will be stricter…



The production is scheduled to wrap in mid October then move to Baton Rouge, LA for shooting and wraps in December…Battleship’s production office is in Chinatown…A Hawaiian blessing will be said prior to the start of tomorrow’s filming…



Cast include Rihanna (above), Alexander Skarsgård, Taylor Kitsch, Brooklyn Decker, Tom Arnold, Tadanobu Asano, Hamish Linklater, Lil Mirkk, Fileena Bahris, and Jesse Plemon…

The film is based on the adaptation of Hasbro’s naval combat board game. The naval fleet must defend the planet from alien invaders…




Decker earlier this year was on Maui shooting the comedy Just Go With It Aadam Sandler, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Aniston…

OAHU  SCHEDULE INCLUDES FIVE DAYS FILMING ON WATER & REMAINING FOUR WEEKS ON LAND




Universal’s Battleship starts filming on Oahu Aug. 30. Pre pro already started…The movie is an adaptation of the Hasbro board game and reportedly now has a budget of $200 million…



No major movie stars have been signed…Cast now includes Alexander SkarsgardTaylor Kitsch and  Rihanna, in her feature debut…The rumor mill also has Hamish Linklater (Fantastic Four) joining the cast as Cal, “a brainy scientist”…



Director is Peter Berg, who directed Duane “The Rock” Johnson in The Rundown that also was filmed on Oahu…



“It’s a big bet like many, many big bets from many studios,” Universal chairman Adam Fogelson told The Hollywood Reporter. “We will be nowhere near the high point and nowhere near the low point of what people are spending…



“(Berg) has a very strong passion and affinity for this material. He is a fan of the history and the current state of the military. He knows that world really, really well, and he is inspirational when he is talking about it”…




Battleship is based on the Hasbro game about naval strategy that’s been around since World War I. Berg’s, according to several published reports, story is about an alien invasion at sea…



This will be Hawaii’s fourth mega ocean epic after the disastrous Waterworld starring Keven Costner – also produced by Universal – and Disney’s successful Pearl Harbor and just completed Pirates of the Caribbean sequel…



As Universal knows full well from its Waterworld production filmed on the Big Island in 1995, any water work can have huge budget overruns. Disney, Hawaii productions sources said, limited its Pirates 4 script to much fewer water-based scenes than the previous three films…



According to sources, Universal executives as late as June considered canceling the Battleship filming thought other execs denied the film was ever in jeopardy…Hawaii sources said that Universal and Battleship execs have prepared “extremely carefully” their water filming in Hawaii to keep that part of the budget “intact”…The Costner produced Waterworld’s reached an unprecedented t$175 million…So Universal wants the Battleship shoot to be on land as much as possible, sources said…



So right now the Oahu shooting plan is only five days of production on the water and the remainder of the five-week shoot land-based…All other ocean “filming” will be shot on soundstages in Baton Rouge, La….



“The production is CGI-heavy,” a source said…Battleship is scheduled for a
May 18, 2012 release…




Hawaii Media is providing grip and lightning equipment…First Team Rentals is providing camera cranes as it did for Predators, Princess Kaiulani, Tropic Thunder and Forgetting Sarah Marshall...
