EMBARRASSMENT OF PRODUCTION RICHES CONTINUES – ABC PUTS OAHU “ON THE MAP”!

JUST IN: True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgard (above) will star as Taylor Kitsch‘s brother in Universal Pictures’ action-adventure Battleship…Skarsgard will play a naval officer while Kitsch’s character is described as the “wildly spirited naval officer who idolizes his brother”…Peter Berg is directing…Battleship begins preproduction in Honolulu in early August with filming beginning August 30 for six weeks…

STEPHEN MCPHERSON, PRESIDENT OF ABC  ENTERTAINMENT GROUP, GETS HIS WISH

During a LOST event interview this year with ABC president Stephen McPherson, the network executive had a difficult moment describing how much ABC “loved” filming in Hawaii from the “incredible crew here, spectacular locations, and film office cooperation”…”We very much want to do another series here, very, very much,” he said…Today, McPherson got his wish…ABC announced that the medical drama Off the Map will be filmed in Hawaii though the pilot was shot in Puerto Rico…According to sources in Los Angeles and Hawaii, Off the Map will begin pre production on Oahu in late July or early August with filming starting about a month later… The series – about a team of medical doctors and staff working “somewhere” in the Amazon – is slated to be a mid-season replacement airing in early 2011…Seven episodes will be shot with more depending on ratings, sources said…

This is Oahu’s second prime-time series this year including CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 remake which starts filming in mid July…But unlike the Five-0 production which is still looking for studio/office space, ABC under McPherson’s guidance  has kept renting the Hawaii Film Studio since LOST wrapped this spring, and will use the facility as a cover set for Off the Map

As itemed last month in Reel Hawaii, Off the Map’s executive producers are Shonda Rhimes (above) and Betsy Beers, also producers on the ABC shows Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice…Rhimes and another producer today are meeting with potential crew at the Hawaii Film Studio…Off the Map stars Martin Henderson (Bride and Prejudice, 2004)…

HERE’S THE STORYLINE: La ciudad de las estrellas (the city of stars) is a tiny town in the South American jungle which has one understaffed, under-stocked medical clinic. That’s where idealistic young Dr. Lily Brenner just landed, along with fellow doctors Mina Minard and Manny Diaz. All of these young doctors are running away from personal demons, but they aren’t the only ones with emotional baggage. Take the legendary and enigmatic Ben Keeton, who was the youngest Chief of Surgery at UCLA. He walked away from it all to found the clinic. Together with his right-hand doctor, Otis Cole, he’ll teach these newcomers how to save lives in the most challenging environment they’ve ever worked in…

In this ensemble drama, five doctors who have lost their way will go to the ends of the earth to try to remember the reasons why they wanted to become doctors in the first place….Off the Map stars Martin Henderson as Ben Keeton, Caroline Dhavernas as Lily Brenner, Enrique Murciano as Manny Diaz, Mamie Gummer as Mina Minard, Jason George as Otis Cole, Valerie Cruz as Zita (Zee) and Jose Julian as Charlie…

Hawaii and especially Oahu is jammed with film and TV productions…On Oahu, four production teams are staying at the Waikiki Marriott, including from Hawaii Five-0, Off the Map, and the big budget feature films Battleship and Pirates of the Caribbean; Pirates currrently is filming on Kauai…

  1. Has Shonda Rhimes visited the Diamond Head Studios yet? Today is June 23, 2010. When I last checked last week she had not done so.

  2. Tim………….
Hope you and yours are well and I miss you.
My agents are talking to OFF THE MAP but I’m 4th in line. Things could change.
Just put me in a room w/ the decision makers and
    I’ll do the rest.

    Be cool

  3. I’m looking forward to “Off The Map” coming to Hawaii. I’m especially enthusiastic about meeting Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers, and Jenna Bans. The storyline and characters lend towards more ethnic and gender diversity both in front of and behind the camera then we’ve had lately. I am hopeful that “Off The Map” may address the question of ageism – the necessity of the “kupuna,” the so called “elders” and their contribution to the writing and production of this project.
