As mentioned in Reel Hawaii for weeks, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of Disney’s action adventure film series from Jerry Bruckheimer Films will be filmed on Kauai and Oahu this summer with preproduction starting in spring. However, the Big Island is also being considered as a location, sources said. Location scout KK Greenley did the scout with the production on Kauai and Oahu while Val Kim is doing the Big Island..Pirates is slated for release in 2011…

Big Island Film Commissioner John Mason knew the Big Island was being scouted but hasn’t been told it was still in consideration as a location…An executive at a production friendly resort on the Kohala Coast also had not heard anything about Pirates filming there…

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will star Johnny Depp in the role of Capt. Jack Sparrow. The film is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Rob Marshall. Writers are Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and the executive producers are Mike Stenson, Chad Oman, Barry Waldman, Elliott, Rossio and John DeLuca

Pre production is expected to begin May 20 with filming “taking up most of the summer, probably two months” a Hawaii source said…Another source told Reel Hawaii that there would be 55 days of filming…

To illustrate the enormity of the Pirates franchise here are some dollar figures from the first three movies, according to Disney…Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003): Budget $140 million, United States gross $305 million, worldwide $653 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man’s Chest (206): Budget $225 million, U.S. gross $423 million, worldwide $1.06 billion; Pirates of the Caribbean: A t World’s End (2007): Budget $300 million; U.S. Gross $309 million, worldwide $958 million. Total budget for first three films is $665 million with total gross worldwide $2.76 billion…

Disney also produces ABC’s LOST on Oahu …

The Walt Disney Company President and CEO Bob Iger (below left) met with Gov. Linda Lingle last Friday to give her  the news…

Bob Iger-Disney, Governor Lingle 1.15.10

“The Walt Disney Company has a great relationship with Hawaii that we’re looking forward to building upon with the filming of the latest adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew,” said Iger. “I thank Governor Lingle and her team for their tremendous support of the projects Disney has underway in this great state.”

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said his production company has always sought out “the most extraordinary and exotic locations for the Pirates of the Caribbean films.” Pirates previously shot briefly on both Maui and Molokai.

“Hawaii provides an amazing range of both land and seascapes, and we’re delighted to return for On Stranger Tides, said Bruckheimer who also filmed Pearl Harbor on Oahu…

The state’s Creative Industries Division and the Hawaii Film Office lead by administrator Georja Skinner began working with Disney last year and organized a series of meetings and conference calls to help secure the business…

Skinner worked collaboratively with the Governor’s office, Department of Taxation and Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert, along with Hawaii Tourism Authority, Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, Kauai Visitors Bureau, the Kauai Film Office, Honolulu Film Office, The Resort Group, Ko Olina Resort, and Disney Vacation Club to help secure Pirates of the Caribbean for Hawaii…

These agencies were were approached in part about assisting in lower than some production costs like accommodations…Why Ko Olina thanks? Disney is building a new mega resort at Ko Olina and the corporation has “a good relationship with Ko Olina,” a source said. Also, there are possible  locations near Barber’s Point which developer Jeff Stone wanted the the production executives to see…

Disney is scheduled to open its first Hawaii resort at Ko Olina in 2011.

And since that’s when the latest Pirates will premier, it’s likely that the state and county have discussed with Disney a possible media junket to visit the resort, see the film, and interview some of the actors…”We are exploring promotional opportunities with Disney,” a source said…

“It was all part of an extensive two-week time frame in which we had to either help to make this location even more attractive or we would lose it to another international location,” Skinner emphasized…

“Hawaii competes on a global basis for productions and to have Disney choose Hawaii over other states and countries is a huge win for us,” said Skinner.  “Creative industries are by nature collaborative and what I think made a difference for us is the combination of our tax incentive as well as local film, travel and destination industry support”…

Skinner doesn’t anticipate any crew shortages when Pirates and possibly Universal’s Battleship are both filming here…

“I have a feeling there will be good flow of crew with all the people coming off of Lost,” she said. “This is an opportunity where with our depth of crew here all our people will be working”…

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is one of several feature film and television productions slated to film in Hawaii this year…Warner Bros. feature Hereafter directed by Clint Eastwood filmed three days on Maui last week….Pre-production is going on for for the feature film The Descendents starring George Clooney and directed by Academy Award®-winning writer/director Alexander Payne. Several network pilots, as well as a Japanese drama series and a Korean drama series are also scouting Hawaii for projects this year…
