RENOVATED USS MISSOURI MAY APPEAR IN U’S “BATTLESHIP”

RENOVATED USS MISSOURI MAY APPEAR IN U’S “BATTLESHIP”

PH #1

JUST IN: The historical USS Missouri which has been in dry dock at Pearl Harbor for nearly three months is being considered for a supporting roll in Universal Studio’s $150-million mega special effects flick Battleship…

Missouri sources said that an Oahu production company will be hired by Universal Studios for the Jan. 7 filming using two teams of photographers to capture the vessel coming out of dry dock and sailing to the Pearl Harbor entrance then returning to its docking pier…

The key shots that Universal wants is an aerial shot of the ship being towed and a photo team on aboard the ship shooting “some real life video that may be enhanced later on,” a USS Missouri spokesperson said.  “This is a unique opportunity to film a battleship underway”…

It’s also exactly the kind of publicity that the USS Missouri Memorial Association was hoping for during the drydocking. Just before the Missouri went into drydock officials publicized for production companies to have access to “this amazing visual opportunity” with advance notice. The ship most recently was featured in Disney’s epic film Pearl Harbor directed by Michael Bay as well as Under Siege starring Steven Segal and in an episode of NBC’s ER…While in dry-dock the Missouri under went a $10-million general maintenance and preservation repairs…

The Missouri is 887 feet long, 209 feet from keel to mast, and weighs from 45,000 tons (unloaded) to 58,000 tons (full load). Today, the Battleship Missouri Memorial serves as a memorial and historic attraction in Pearl Harbor. The Missouri sits 1,000 feet from the USS Arizona Memorial…

Logistics are currently being worked out with the U.S. Navy, the Pearl Harbor harbormaster, base security and other ships’s schedule…Universal’s $150-million Battleship is expected to begin three months of filming in August on Oahu…

U’S “BATTLESHIP” TO FILM IN HAWAII THIS SUMMER BUT AUSTRALIA FIRST

U’S “BATTLESHIP” TO FILM IN HAWAII THIS SUMMER BUT AUSTRALIA FIRST

BATTLESHIP DIRECTOR PETER BERG TELLS REPORTERS “MOST” OF THE FILMING WILL BE IN AUSTRALIA

0000245598-92326L

The Hawaii filming of Universal Studio’s $150-million mega pic Battleship has been pushed until mid summer while the production likely will start the shoot in Australia, several sources have confirmed. That’s a reversal of the original plans since producers were going to film in Hawaii first beginning as soon as April…Not to worry, a source says, this “alternative” was always in the plan as a possibility…

How long Battleship will film in Hawaii depends in part on a January scout to decide exactly what can be shot here and then how long that will take, sources told Reel Hawaii…

Universal officials did not  comment on why Australia might he used more than Hawaii, but local production sources with knowledge of the Battleship plans said some factors are the lack of available space here for sound stages and offices and no water tank large enough to accommodate the production’s filming needs that may include sinking ships….The Hawaii Film Studio’s 96,000-gallon water tank  – built for the Baywatch Hawaii television series – is too small for Battleship‘s needs and not functioning. “They need something large enough to sink battleships,” a source quipped. “But we knew that Australia would be the location for the tank shoot before we ever scouted here” ..Sources in Los Angeles and Hawaii emphasized that the decision to film in Australia – specifically in the Queensland province – has nothing to do with the tax incentives offered Down Under…

The especially good news is that Battleship‘s marine coordinator reportedly “loves Hawaii” and wants to shoot as much as possible on Oahu, most likely the westside, sources said. The Oahu filming will be 4 to 6 weeks…A Universal Studios spokesperson emphaiszed that  “it’s early in the development process for Battleship, and the proportion of the locations where we will shoot the film is still in play”…

Battleship production execs have been talking to some Hawaii crew and equipment companies while looking for soundstage and production office space, including in Halawa Valley,  the former Comp USA building, and a 30,000 square-foot space near Honolulu International Airport…”Their needs are very, very large,” a source said…

Berg told reporters in San Diego earlier this week that they’re just beginning to cast Battleship and that not a lot of big names will be attached to the production. The filmmaker explained that he’s a big fan of how J.J. Abrams cast Star Trek: “young, up and comers who weren’t exactly household names before the blockbuster was released”…

Berg also said  that Battleship will feature aliens as the antagonists with the  movie involving a eartlhing naval fleet engaged in combat with aliens. The interviews were conducted aboard the USS Sterett…

According to published interviews, Berg said the aliens are “a group of life forms from some other planet have come to our planet for something. They’ve got a very specific agenda. That agenda is not global domination. It’s an agenda and that agenda puts them into conflict with members of our military. Their technology is relatable. It’s not incredibly far out and unbeatable. It’s comprehensible”…

Here’s more

Here’s some more information from Berg, according to the Cinematical website:

– Battleship follows a small fleet of American and international ships (5 ) that for some reason get separated from the rest of the Navy and must take on an opposing fleet of alien ships that have arrived on earth in order to build some sort of “bridge” that will help their alien race in some way…

– The aliens are called The Regents who are not here to destroy earth or humankind. They want to use earth to help save their own species. But they will defend themselves if provoked…

– The aliens are a mix of human actors and CGI. Berg compared them to Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Battleship has a release date of July 29, 2011…

SOUL SURFER SUBJECT SLATED FOR NBC’S TODAY SHOW APPEARANCE FRIDAY DEC. 11

Six weeks of pre preproduction on the long-delayed biopic Soul Surfer about Kauai wave rider Bethany Hamilton who had an arm amputated in a shark attack begins monday, several sources confirmed. That’s more good news for Hawaii’s production community and co producers Brookwell/McNamara Entertainment who have labored for months on the script and helping to cement funding. Filming is scheduled to start either Jan. 19 or Jan. 26, sources said…

Oahu filming will be 4-6 weeks and 1-4 days on Kauai…

UPM is the always affable Kenny Burke who just finished working on Island Film Group’s The Honeymoon… Hamilton who is competing in the Van’s Triple Crown of Surfing on Oahu’s North Shore is scheduled to be on NBC’s Today Show Friday, Dec. 11 for an interview with Meredith Vierra to discuss her surfing career, the Soul Surfer film and possibly the movie’s stars…Casting is still ongoing but producers reportedly are considering veteran actor and sometime Maui resident Helen Hunt to portray Hamilton’s mother and AnnaSophia Robb (below) as Hamilton…

Annasophia Robb

Locations likely will include two homes representing Hamilton’s Kauai residence and one for her girlfriend Alana; a church/community center, Kahuku Hospital but primarily the ocean and beaches bordering the Turtle Bay Resort. Kawela Bay might be used since the script describes a location that requires a walk through a tunnel of tall trees…One scene also requires a pier location…Most of the surfing sequences including the tiger shark attack on Hamilton’s character will be filmed north of the Turtle Bay Resort which is where the production is based…(The actual shark attack occurred on Kauai’s North Shore)…
