Soul Surfer, the story of Kauai surfer Bethany Hamilton‘s shark attack five years ago and subsequent recovery, continues to move forward.  Joey Paul out of Los Angeles is doing casting which includes 22 roles and eight key parts; two of the key roles will be cast in L.A. Paul did casting for Lifetime’s Special Delivery which filmed on Oahu in 2008. But he also has a working relationship with Soul Surfer’s producers Brookwell-McNamara Entertainment on their Oahu series Beyond the Break, and earlier That’s So Raven, Even Stevens and The Even Stevens Movie…

The film will shoot for 28 days: 80 percent on Oahu – mostly in and around Turtle Bay Resort – and 20 percent on Kauai’s north shore featuring Hamilton’s beach house, church, school, scenics of Hanalei Bay, the surf spot Pine Trees, Kilauea Lighthouse, and Bali Hai. Turtle Bay Resort’s Keoki Wallace has been assisting with that area’s location scouting…A North Shore Oahu church and Kahuku hospital likely will be used as locations…

Crew number will be under 65 and except for four key positions – director, director of photography, line producer, and casting agent – all will be Hawaii based. Sean McNamara also will direct the film…Brian Keaulana is in charge of water safety, Mike Pritchett is doing water photography with Mike Stewart likely being used to capture inside the tube footage…The film will get heavy promotional support – not for budget which is $7.5 million – from Rip Curl which sponsors Hamilton who will do her own stunts and surfing…

According to published reports, the film will be distributed by Sony Family Pictures for a September 2009 release. Screenwriter is Brian Hurwitz

Hawaii Film Partners is ramping up quickly for a March 17 start date of its first feature film Wedlocked which shoots for about four weeks until April 17, all on Oahu. At least a dozen locations will be used for exterior locations with Kualoa Ranch likely being “prominent.”  There are country – North Shore from Mokuleia all the way around the windward side – and town locations. Secret Island at Kualoa will be used as a beach and maybe Kawela Bay, Waimea Falls  or Jackass Ginger for a scene requiring a secluded blue lagoon with a waterfall. Oahu is standing in for Tahiti in the film…Production designer is Scott Meehan who was art director on Forgetting Sarah Marshall and for some ABC’ Lost episodes…
