ALERT! SAG BOARD TURNS DOWN STUDIOS OFFER

ALERT! SAG BOARD TURNS DOWN STUDIOS OFFER

The board of the Screen Actors Guild rejected the “final offer” by the Hollywood studios for a new contract covering the union’s 120,000 members, creating fresh uncertainty about whether and when the seven-month labor dispute will end, according to the Los Angeles Times. The Times said that the rejection was anticipated because the studios’ proposal contained a provision that SAG negotiators viewed as a non-starter.  Not good news for an industry where production activity has already slowed. The studios and SAG seemed close to striking a deal earlier this week after the union’s negotiators made what they said were key concessions, including accepting a framework for how actors will be paid for their work in content distributed on the Internet, the Times reported. That framework is modeled upon terms agreed to by three other Hollywood talent guilds.

However,  SAG negotiators balked at the studios’ demand that the union’s contract expire in three years, rather than two years. Studio executives insist that a three-year contract is necessary to ensure stability. A three-year deal, however, would mean SAG’s contract would expire a year later than the labor contracts of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the writers and directors guilds, the Times said. SAG leaders believe that would weaken their bargaining clout by preventing them from joining forces with the other unions in the next round of contract negotiations.

In a statement, SAG accused the studios of inserting a “last-minute and surprise demand” that was not brought up in earlier negotiations, including during federal mediation talks in November.

“By attempting to extend our contract expiration one year beyond the other entertainment unions, the AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) intends to de-leverage our bargaining position from this point forward. … The AMPTP has clearly stated their need and desire for financial certainty and industry peace.  This new proposal does the exact opposite, and will only result in constant negotiating cycles and continued labor unrest.”

SAG’s board stopped short of asking union members to approve a strike. The next logical step for SAG representatives is to initiate back-channel contacts with some senior studio executives to see if a showdown can be averted. SAG now is preparing to begin negotiations Monday with producers of commercials, which are covered under a separate contract.

MTV’s The Hills snuck into Oahu to film some three days in and around the Turtle Bay Resort a & OceanVillas and  North Shore, including a bonfire at Kawela Bay, a hotel Jacuzzi near the Turtle Bay pool, surfing at Sunset Beach, and possibly a dinner at  Haleiwa Joe’s…The series’ crew arrived from Los Angeles last Friday with the actors landing on Oahu on Sunday afternoon. The production used about 20 local and L.A. crew. HMI of Honolulu provided some equipment. The actors are staying in four of Turtle Bay’s luxury oceanfront cottages – about $500 a night minus a production discount – in the  block, and two second floor villas. The actors leave tomorrow (Tuesday) while the production ramps out on Wednesday…Turtle Bay Resort officials declined all comment citing a confidentiality clause with MTV…Jim Triplett, location  manager for Lost, is assisting with locations on The Hills…The cast on Oahu includes Lauren Conrad, Audrina Patridge, Whitney Port,  Lo Bosworth, and Stephanie Pratt. Good news on the Hawaii production front! The on-again, off-again Soul Surfer bio pic about Kauai surfer Bethany Hamilton

bethany-hamilton

who had her left arm bitten off by a tiger shark some five years ago and is now on the professional surfing circuit, is slated to begin filming on Oahu in mid April. That”s according to creative producer Dutch  Hoffstetter who says the production has the $7.5-million to get started….The production, which had hoped to begin filming last September, will be based  at the Turtle Bay Resort. “Ninety-five percent” of Soul Surfer will film along Oahu’s North Shore with some second unit work on Kauai, the producer said…Hofstetter describes Hamilton’s the  feature films as “Blue Crush meets Chariots of Fire“…

The film is based on Hamilton’s book, Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board…

074349922001lzzzzzzz

Soul Surfer chose Oahu instead of Hamilton’s home base on Kauai for budget reasons since the majority of needed crew live on Oahu, Hoffstetter said. The script, which had to have approval of the Hamilton family, has gone through at least three revisions and two other writers. The final script is by Brian Horowitz, Hoffstetter said. Co producers are David Brookwell and Sean McNanamarawho also is directing. Brookwell-McNamara  produced three season of Beyond the Break primarily on Oahu’s West side…According to Hoffsettter, Brian Keaulana will be in charge of water safety. Kauai waterman Titus Kinimaka and his wife also will work on Soul Surfer…Filming will be five weeks. Hamilton will do her own surfing but will not act in the film, the producer said….Casting for principal roles is being done in Los Angeles…There will be some 65 local crew, Hoffstetter said…

The private screening of the long-awaited feature film Princess Ka’iulani shot in Hawaii and England attracted hundreds of Hawaii crew, film executives, state legislators and supporters to Ward 16 on Wednesday night. No news media attended…Attendees included the film’s co producers  Ric Galindez and Roy Tjioe of Island Film Group and director-writer Marc Forby who traveled from Los Angeles for the event…Forby thanked the Iolani Palace executive board and the Hawaii Film Office for their assistance in getting some of the locations needed for the film to be made accurately. Forby said a Universal Studio executive told him if that studio had made PK it would have cost closer to $30 million and $10 million…Island Film Group hopes Forby will write a screenplay for a King Kamehameha feature…

pk-island-film-group-producers-11

“This has been a tremendously long journey,” Galindez said. “We wanted to show Hawaii as a real place. Most people see (Hawaii) on postcards”…Partner Tjoe who usually remains behind the scenes was a bit more outspoken: “This film pulls no punches in showing exactly how the overthrow occurred. I think this may be the  first film to do so”…

Tjioe told the crowd how important Hawaii’s investment credit Act 221 was in getting PK made…”This film was not possible without Act 221 (investments),” he said. Princess Ka’iulani is a 110-minute advertisement for Hawaii that will be shown around the world. How much advertising value is that to the state?”…Then Tjioe emphatically told the agreeing crowd that Hawaii legislators cannot “not mess with Act 221″…The state is considering dropping film and television productions from Act 221’s provisions in part saying the production community work it provides aren’t “real jobs,” Tjioe said. “Don’t tell me these are real jobs. The money our staff was paid was used for mortgages, food, education for their kids”…

Writer-director Forby said that “this film is finally finished for me is unbelievable for me”…Forby said he made the overnight trip from Los Angeles because he wanted to be with “the crew that made this film happen and who all supported me”…Forby was referring to some Hawaiian protests about the production being allowed to film in Iolani Palace…(Reel News was invited not as media but because I did a few days of set still photography for the production.)…

All in attendance agreed that the original music composed by Stephen Warbeck and performed by the Honolulu Symphony is nothing short of incredible as are the period costumes and production values…

PK is co-produced by Matador Pictures, Trailblazer Films and Island Film Group. Princess Ka’iulani is portrayed by former Hawaii resident Q’Orianka Kilcher, best known for her role as Pocahontas in the 2005 film The New World starring Colin FarrellPK, which employed 300 locals for the Hawaii shoot, will be shown this weekend in Berlin to potential distributors then be shown at the Cannes, Toronto, and Hawaii International film festivals…

VH1’s reality series My Antonio starring Anthony Sabato wraps Sunday with filming at the Hilton Waikoloa where the $4 million production to air this summer has been based for about four weeks….It was quite a scene Friday on the My Antonio set where the five female competitors vying for soap star Sabato’s affection had to do a fire walk scene set at the hotel’s Buddha Point. Coals were set ablaze with wood in a fire pit with two women grooming the coals until it burned down to be able to walk on. mfire9

“It started out looking like a bonfire,” a crew member said….The five contestants, Sabato and his mother, Yvonne Kabouchy, arrived at the set at the same time. A handler instructed the women how to walk across the glowing coals. The women, all in fancy cocktail dresses and, of course, bare foot, walked over the coals one at a time taking about three long steps…Sabato and his mother were the first to walk over the coals…Afterwards Sabato and mom huddled to select the four winning contestants of this event cutting the group to four…All the filming for the show has been done either at the hotel or on private property…Crew will begin removing the set and production equipment at Buddha Point on Monday…
