TEMPEST POWERS THROUGH FIRE & RAIN AND LOTS OF RED MUD

Rocker-turned-actor Reeve Carney is the latest cast member of The Tempest, director Julie Taymor’s gender-bending Shakespeare play adaptation. Chris Cooper, who joined the cast a week ago, plays Antonio, who usurps the Duchess of Milan, Prospera, played by Helen Mirren (in the play, the character was male). Carney plays Ferdinand, the son of the king of Naples, played by Jeremy Irons…Carney is the lead vocalist and guitar player for his band, Carney. Taymor discovered him in New York when she went to see his band perform.

The beautifully renovated Marriott Waikoloa Beach Resort & Spa has scored big time the last couple of months in attracting film productions…The resort just finished housing for about three weeks the cast and crew of Honokaa Boy that shot primarily in Honokaa. Now comes about 95 cast and crew for at least three days for Miramax’s The Tempest. Marriott Waikoloa execs are ecstatic…“We’re very, very excited and grateful,” said a Marriott sales exec…Several crew working on The Tempest on Lanai told Reel Hawaii that the Marriott stay is “a done deal”…

The $20-million production is scheduled to start its Big Island filming on Dec. 7 at Anaehoomalu Bay fronting the Marriott with a special effects scene shot with “a limited crew,” sources said.

The beach and bay must be cleared of boats and other beach activity gear like kayaks before the scene is filmed. The big scene includes having the shipwrecked cast walking ashore. But the trick is to show them leaving the water dressed and dry. To do that the characters may have to walk backwards into the water, sources said…

Tempest production equipment needed for the Big Island filming will be shipped by chartered barge from Lanai on Dec. 5 to Kawaihae Harbor…

TheTempest production was only slightly affected by the recent Lanai fire. Shooting in the Manele Bay area was postponed for a day. The Hawaii crew which were staying at the Manele Bay Hotel had to be evacuated to several vacation homes in Lanai city while cast and production execs at the Lodge at Koele were able to stay put…

The crew have been moved back to the Manele Bay resort but will have to move out again this week to make room for guests who reserved accommodations there long before the production confirmed dates to film on the island. According to several Hawaii crew, the moving has not set well with the locals since the Hollywood crew, they said, has not had to relocate…Tempest executives were not available for comment…

Filming this week is scheduled at a “very muddy” Garden of the Gods, a nearby ironwood forest, and a kiawe thicket on the way to Shipwreck Beach…The production is filming six days a week instead of the usual five because of the tight shooting schedule and budget…

“It’s been really tough because (the producers) haven’t been able to do what they had planned to do when they planned to do it,” a Lanai source said. “They’ve had to switch things around because of the weather and the fire. Some of the locations have been so muddy that trucks got stuck..(The production) “is definitely behind schedule. I don’t know how they’re going to make it up…schedules have had to be changed which has caused problems moving equipment to the new spots”…

Other Big Island locations include Kekaha Kai State Park,

two beach parks in Puna, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, then on the last day Dec. 18 a night shot in a Hilo warehouse that will be dressed to look like a ship interior…

Charley Long‘s Private Security is using 20 security workers for the Lanai shoot, including 12 from Lanai, five from the Big Island, and three from Oahu…

Coconut Wireless ALERT: CBS’s new Hawaii Five-0 series still has a tentative start production date on oahu of mid January though that was announced before last week’s Screen Actors Guild request to members for a strike vote…
