JIMMY BUFFET MAKES HIS DEBUT AS GUEST START ON HAWAII FIVE-0′S ”KI’ILUA” EPISODE

It’s a major departure for Reel Hawaii to review films, but I can’t restrain myself from gushing over the Sony Pictures film The Descendants directed by Academy Award winning director Alexander Payne. It is a flawless work of art and a model of reserved filmmaking understated in the dialogue, acting, and the Hawaiian music…Clooney once again gives a stellar everyman performance conveying honest feelings and doubts in trying to solve some major issues, not the least of which is his wife’s pending death, her affair, a rebellious 17-year-old daughter played remarkably true by Shailene Woodley, and whether or not to sell the family’s land trust for a half-billion dollars or keep it to preserve that he knows will infuriate the other heirs…Clooney’s magic has little to do with his his beguiling good looks but with his emotional honesty that in The Descendants any husband, father, and businessman will understand…

Woodley’s portrayal of the oldest daughter Alexandra King is so real that it’s sometimes difficult to watch her deal with the issues about her mom and her anger at her father’s absence because of his legal practice…Beau Bridges as Clooney’s cousin Brian who wants the  land sale to go through is pure BB, real, darkly humorous and gut wrenching…Local actor Barbara L. Southern as the Alzheimer inflicted grandmother is so real one came away thinking is she ill with the desease…

I expect The Descendants to be nominated for an Oscar for either directing or acting….

What is especially remarkable is that director Payne spent so much time in pre production studying Hawaii, its’ people, land issues, music, big city problems like homelessness, traffic and crime so he could get it right…And he did…

The Descendants wouldn’t have happened if not for author Kaui Hart Hemmings‘ book, a reserved take on Hawaii using a kamaaina family to illustrate that even “paradise” has major problems…Kaui, you must feel so proud and Hawaii is proud of you for being a truly honest writer…

Hana hou to the mostly all Hawaii crew who helped bring this story to life, including makeup artists Karen Iboshi Preiser, Debra Rego, production management Renee Confair, art department coordinator Serena Rios Flores, set buyer Camille Komine, ADR mixer Chris Navarro, stunts Brian L. Keaulana and Titus Kinimaka, first assistant camera “B” camera Rick Brock, underwater camera operator Don King, music supervisor Dondi Bastone, transportation coordinator John Reed, location manager Jim Triplett and assistant location manager Timmy Chinn, travel and shipping coordinator Ashley C. Smith…

Entertainer/entrepreneur Jimmy Buffett get some major face time in the Hawaii Five-0 episode “Ki’ilua” with two days filming at Kualoa Ranch. Buffett plays a grizzled and grumpy former military pilot named Frank Bama, apparently an inside joke on Buffett being raised in Alabama…Some scenes were supposed to take place in Korea at “Frank’s” helicopter hangar where the crew climbs in then lifts off. Another was a bar scene where Terry O’Quinn (Joe) introduces McGarrett and Danno to Frank…There is also a missile firing and a bridge explosion…

Star Trek’s sequel filming which sources said had planned to shoot in Hawaii for 18 days in January has been postponed…Paramount has scouted some Hawaiian islands – Kauai and Oahu specifically – but pretty much decided to film on the Garden Island…Along with the filming about two months of pre production also had been scheduled to start in November…

Star Trek pre-production on the sequel is currently underway in Los Angeles. The script — written by Alex Kutzman, Roberto Orci, and Damon Lindelof — is expected to be completed by the end of September. There’s still no update on when the sequel will be released. It was originally set for June 29, 2012…Mainland sources say that the film could open in summer or winter  2013…
